A GROUP of young Helensburgh volunteers had the honour of helping out at the opening ceremony of the Solheim Cup last week.

The Police Scotland Youth Volunteers (PSYV) joined other members of the nationwide scheme at Gleneagles, known as the ‘home of golf’.

The competition kicked off on Thursday, September 12, as the best female golfers from the USA and Europe went head-to-head in the 16th edition of the event and the first to be held in Scotland since 2000.

The Helensburgh youngsters got the chance to meet some of the players as well as former Scotland national team manager Gordon Strachan, while home favourites Texas entertained the crowds on stage.

Youth engagement officer PC Stephen Carr said: “It was another fabulous opportunity for the group.

“Team USA captain Juli Inkster and Gordon Strachan were both kind enough to spend some time with our youth volunteers Taylor and Errin and gave them a few tips on their backswing and short game.”
