A STUDENT from a Dumbarton martial arts club is set to represent the United Kingdom.
Kenny Gilkison is a black belt in Iaido, a Japanese sword martial art that has been in existence for hundreds of years.
Despite taking up the sport just two years ago, Kenny will represent Team GB at the Iaido European championships in Athens.
From November 1 to November 3, Kenny will fight as a member of the British Iaido Team for the 26th European Iaido Championship.
Kenny said: “I am deeply honoured to have been selected to represent the United Kingdom and will do my best to uphold the true spirit of Iaido.”
Kenny practices Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido specifically.
And following the competition, he will sit an exam - officially called a ‘grading’ - which he hopes will lead to him being awarded the higher grade of second dan.
Kenny has been training with Donnie Gordon, the dojo leader, for the last two years.
And the other members of the Yushinkan Dojo on Church Street will be cheering him on.
Donnie said: “Kenny has worked hard to achieve his place in the team and I am delighted that his efforts have been recognised.
“His achievement is of particular importance to us as our club has only been going for two years.”
Students of the sport gain fitness, focus and friends.
The dojo are always looking for new members. Beginners classes start soon, and if you would like to try it out, then feel free to contact Donnie on 07712825143.
