A Dumbarton man has been charged with stealing goods worth more than £1,000 from a supermarket on Cardross Road.

Police officers were called to the Waitrose store in Helensburgh at 10am on September 25 in response to a report of a suspected shoplifter on the premises.

A 28-year-old man from Dumbarton was arrested at the scene on suspicion of theft by shoplifting, both on the date in question and on two earlier occasions.

He was charged with three counts of theft by shoplifting with a total value of £1,057.11, and was held in custody to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court the following day.

The incident comes just a few weeks after Argyll and Bute's licensing board was told of concerns over lack of security at the Cardross Road store after the theft of thousands of pounds worth of alcoholic drinks from the shop.

The board heard in August that one reported haul, in March 2017, was worth around £1,500, while another in January of this year had an estimated value of £965.

A third attempted theft, in the same month, was intercepted as the alleged shoplifters tried to leave with goods worth an estimated £668.

Waitrose has been asked to supply a fuller report on its security measures to the licensing board's next meeting in support of an application to increase the amount of space in the shop given over to alcohol sales.
