We may be a nation of dog lovers but very little is known about the thinking behind the decisions that go into finding the perfect pooch.

That is why the Dogs Trust is asking owners and potential owners to take part in the Choosing My Dog survey, which will reveal all about how a dog becomes someone’s four-legged friend.

The unique study will reveal the thinking behind the decision to go for a certain breed and where they get the dog from, and will help the charity understand buyers’ behaviour.

By learning more, the Dogs Trust aims to advise potential owners and help them to avoid dodgy dealers.

Rebecca Mead, Choosing My Dog project lead, said: “Although many people buy dogs each year, hardly anything is known about how and why we reach those decisions.

“It’s important to remember that, sadly, not all breeders can be trusted, so there is a real need to understand how people are choosing their dog so we can better support buyers and safeguard dog welfare.”
