A FORMER police box in Alexandria is to be transformed into a hub for hiring bikes.

The Vale of Leven Trust has taken ownership of the property in Main Street, Bonhill, after a successful community asset transfer application.

The building ceased being used by police in 1968 before it was transferred to the County Council of Dunbartonshire.

It has been let to commercial tenants since then, but has been vacant for more than five years and requires upgrading.

The trust now plans to bring the building back up to standard and use it for storing bikes for the public to hire.

The community asset transfer was approved at last week’s meeting of the infrastructure, regeneration and economic development committee.

Councillor Iain McLaren, convener of the committee, said: “I am all for community groups and organisations taking control of buildings and putting them to good use. “This particular example means the building will be refurbished and brought back into a positive use which will be a benefit for the whole community.”

Councillor Marie McNair, vice convener, said the facility will be a “great addition” to the area.

: “Transforming this property into such a brilliant facility will be a great addition to this community.

She added: “Not only will it encourage local residents to get out and enjoy the nature that surrounds them, benefitting their health and well-being immensely, it will perhaps even encourage visitors to come and enjoy the beauty of the River Leven.”

The property will have room for 18 bikes, with a repair station, sink and toilet.
