A community choir from Dumbarton will feature in prime time TV slots this Christmas.

Every Voice Choir will sing in a specially commissioned BBC documentary which follows Scottish Ballet during the highlights of its 50th anniversary year.

The show follows the collaboration between the dementia-friendly choir and the ballet company which devised a special way to celebrate its anniversary year.

For this, it asked the public to suggest five wishes which it could make come true in its anniversary year.

Responding to the call, Lesley Cumming, Alzheimer Scotland’s community activities officer for West Dunbartonshire, wished for Scottish Ballet to perform alongside the Dumbarton choir as part of its summer celebration.

Over 400 wishes were submitted, with over 100,000 votes cast by the general public, and Lesley's emerged a winner against all the odds.

This led to choirmaster Bryan Marshall and members being invited to rehearse with the dancers in Scottish Ballet’s biggest studio.

There then followed a sell-out performance at St Augustine’s Church in Dumbarton in June.

A highlight of the show was the choir's performance of Yazoo’s ‘Only You’, accompanied by dancers from the ballet company, which received a standing ovation.

The documentary, 'Five Wishes', will be shown on BBC One (Scotland) on Monday December 23 at 7pm and repeated on Christmas Day on BBC Scotland at 7pm.

A BBC Insider told the Dumbarton Reporter: "The choir are 'unexpected stars' of the documentary.

"They feature prominently in a very moving and emotional section of the show."

Lesley said: "It has been amazing for the choir and their families to be involved with Scottish Ballet who have been very kind.

"The buzz the choir has had from this has been amazing."

To cap it all, the choir members were guests at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh for Scottish Ballet's production of the much-loved fairy tale, 'The Snow Queen'.

The choir was invited on stage to perform a Christmas song for the audience after matinee performance on December 12.

Lesley said: "How incredible was that - to sing at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh.

"That topped off the whole year."

The Snow Queen is also being broadcast, on BBC Scotland on Christmas Eve at 7.30pm and on BBC Four at a later date.
