ASDA Dumbarton staff are facing possible job losses after the supermarket launched a redundancy consultation this week.

Back office functions are set to be combined and centralised, meaning colleagues in admin, the cash office, personnel, and regional gatekeepers could be at risk.

There will be a minimum of 45 days collective consultation, with the first redundancies taking place at the beginning of April.

Store chiefs say the need for reductions in staff is because of the continuing rise of card payments over cash, centralisation of tasks, and the move from paper to digital.

Meanwhile, the fish counter at the St James Retail Park store is set to close.

The move is part of a nationwide initiative from the firm which will see fish and meat counters close for good from February 16.

They are set to be replaced by in-store ‘Food for Now’ trials that store chiefs claim will offer customers "more choice, great value and some exciting new brand partnerships".

A variety of ranges will be in store including hot chicken and pies, and sushi.

ASDA says there will be no job losses, redundancies, or loss of contractual hours for affected colleagues due to the meat and fish counters closing.

Elizabeth Ruddiman, senior manager of Food for Now, added: “Asda has a long history of innovation and trials aimed at providing increased customer choice and we want to use this as an opportunity to better meet customers’ needs at a local level.”
