DUMBARTON and the Vale's MP joined tens of thousands of marchers who tooks to the streets of Glasgow to show their support for an independent Scotland.

Among the procession was Martin Docherty-Hughes, local SNP MP, who took to Twitter on Saturday with various posts declaring his support for the march, which was one of the largest independence marches that Scotland has seen.

Mr Docherty-Hughes told the Reporter: “Whatever your views on independence, we can all agree that Scotland’s future must be in Scotland’s hands – not Boris Johnson’s.

“Tens of thousands of people turned out at Saturday’s march despite the dreich weather, clearly showing the strength of feeling across the country.

"I was honoured to join so many people from West Dunbartonshire and across Scotland to demonstrate our democratic right to self-determination.

“The SNP won a landslide victory at last month’s election, reinforcing the Scottish Parliaments clear mandate to hold an independence referendum.

"The longer the Tories and Labour try to stand in the way of that, the more Scots will see that we are being treated with disdain by Westminster.

“Much has changed since 2014, but the case for independence has never been stronger.

"It’s no surprise that more people than ever are saying they would vote yes to an independent Scotland.”

Dumbarton and Vale of Leven Reporter:

SNP leader and Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon has frequently called for another referendum on independence after claiming that promises made to the Scottish Parliament after the 2014 referendum were not kept, and that the result of the EU referendum warrants a new case for independence.

However UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has been vocal about his opposition to a second independence referendum, claiming the issue had already been settled in a “once-in-a-generation” vote in 2014.

On January 14, Mr Johnson sent a letter to the first minister, stating: “The UK government will continue to uphold the democratic decision of the Scottish people at the promise that you made to them.

"For that reason, I cannot agree to any request for a transfer of power that would lead to further independence referendums.”
