Hundreds of trains through Dumbarton are still being cancelled each year despite improvements.

Routes including those through the town’s main station saw 2,143 trans cancelled in 2018 and 1,231 last year. Around 5,000 were partly cancelled both years.

But 22,466 trains were more than five minutes late in 2018, improving to 19,147 last year.

Figures released to the Scottish Green Party revealed the state of the rails, even as ScotRail claimed in January they were seeing improved commuter satisfaction.

The Scottish Government is stripping the rail franchise from Abellio three years early because of their performance.

The worst rail line for delays and full cancellations were routes going through Argyll Street and Glasgow Central low level. Part cancellations were worst for lines through Glasgow Queen Street low level.

Scottish Green MSP for the West of Scotland Ross Greer said: “The huge number of cancellations and delays on the Clydebank rail route is totally unacceptable and shows the need for significant investment in Scotland’s railways.

“After decades of cuts and under-investment our rail network is barely coping and it is passengers and the planet suffering because of it.

“The Scottish Government claims to recognise the urgency of the climate emergency but is continuing to spend billions on unneeded motorway expansion projects when even a fraction of that money spent on our railways instead would lead to huge improvements.

“We deserve the kind of quality public transport that almost all of our European neighbours have.”
