CUSTOMERS travel from as far as Aberdeen for their freshly made donuts while the reduced sugar shortbread has weary shoppers lining up.

Andells restaurant and tearoom in Glasgow’s Savoy Centre, has attracted glowing reviews on Trip Advisor for their grub. Now, the family-run business is celebrating being crowned Glasgow’s best eatery at Scotland’s Business Awards.

Owner Linda McGregor says they “don’t do processed”, everything on the menu is cooked from scratch while soups, stews and steak pies have lower levels of salt and fat and gluten free diets are catered for.

Linda’s best-selling Chicken Fajitas contain a secret blend of spices that is regularly requested by relatives in the U.S.

Linda, who lives in Deaconsbank on Glasgow’s South Side and runs the cafe with her daughter Lynsey said she was “absolutely delighted” after Sunday’s award win.

She said: “It was a really emotional night for us. The centre has suffered a lot with the two fires on Sauchiehall Street.

“It’s picked up a bit now but it has been a struggle.

“We try to modify our food for all diners. Everything is cooked from scratch and we don’t do processed food. If someone is on a diet we use an oil spray.

“I’ve tasted a lot of chicken fajitas in Glasgow and I think ours are the best.

“It’s a blend of spices I use. A lot of my family live in the States and I took a kilo of it over to them. They were joking that only someone from Glasgow would take a kilo of powder over to America. Everything was declared of course.”

Linda clocks in at 7am every day to prepare all the cakes and dishes including lasagnes and chilli and also makes wedding cakes on request. She worked in catering before taking over the cafe eight years ago.

The only sugar in her donuts is on the outside while those following a Scottish Slimmers' diet can enjoy four meringues per ‘syn’.

She said:”We have a customer who comes from Aberdeen. She phones up ahead to order a box.”

Andells, which has an on-site children’s creche and was previously Windows, received a special message of congratulations from the U.S owners of the Savoy Centre, Castle Forge and landlords Reith Lambert.

Another Savoy business Babyspot picked up the consumer award and both businesses will now go forward to the national final, which is being held in Glasgow in May.
