A male Persian cat was discovered abandoned in Alexandria last Saturday.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after the tabby cat was found tied to a fence outside a house in Braehead, Alexandria.

The animal welfare charity is caring for the cat after a member of the public phoned its animal helpline on March 29.

Jennifer Connolly, Scottish SPCA inspector said “We believe that this cat was deliberately abandoned as it was wearing a harness with a lead and was tied securely to the fence.

“The cat is a male Persian tabby who is unfortunately not microchipped.

The cat's fur was very badly matted which would not have happened overnight. He also appeared to very underweight.

Due to condition of his severely matted fur staff at the animal rescue and rehoming centre were forced to shave him.

Ms Connolly added: “He is now receiving the care he deserves  from our expert team.

“We appreciate this is a very uncertain time just now but there is never an excuse for abandoning an animal.

If anyone has any information about how the cat came to be left this way, please contact the Scottish SPCA's confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
