Scotland is in lockdown. Shops are closing and newspaper sales are falling fast. We're not exaggerating when we say that the future of the Dumbarton and Vale of Leven Reporter is under threat.
Please consider supporting the Reporter in whatever way you can – by paying just 85p for a copy of the paper, when you're shopping for essential supplies for yourself and others, or by subscribing to our e-edition here.

A digital community project based in Dumbarton is helping to put smiles on the faces of people feeling lonely and isolated as the coronavirus lockdown continues.

A befriender phone service offered by volunteers and staff at the Bellsmyre-based project is proving a success in lifting spirits.

Project manager Kathleen Smith said the phone service had worked "really well".

She added: "Those we have contacted have been very appreciative.

"For some, it’s the only social contact they have and we are delighted to be able to help.

"I have to say, it’s a pleasure for us as well.

"Most people are upbeat and making the best of things, and we laugh together."

The phone service is just one of several strands of help on offer from the Bellsmyre Digital Community project.

The charity is offering vital support to people needing emergency supplies of food, toiletries and medications.

People can also take part in online exercise sessions and reading, while IT gurus will help with PCs, laptops, tablets and mobile phones.

Kathleen said: "Over the last week, it’s been mainly about exercise.

"There is something for everybody - gentle through to energetic, with different posts every day.

"It’s pleasing to see that the community has been engaging with us and that we’re actually helping people.

"People who haven’t exercised for a long time are now creating their own regime, and children are joining in, too.

"This week is going to be mostly about reading, again with different posts every day."

Kathleen is urging people to share what they are reading, be it books, audio books, online books, magazines or newspapers.
