A CAFE in Yoker has launched a fundraiser to provide free meals to vulnerable members of the community during the Covid-19 crisis.

Generous members of the public have helped Dee Dee’s smash the £4,000 target set in an online crowdfunder to help meet the cost of its Munch Stop project.

Since the beginning of the month, staff at Dumbarton Road Corridor Youth Project have been identifying children and their families who are in particular need of support during the coronavirus lockdown.

By April 6, they had distributed more than 600 free meals, cooked by Dee Dee’s to at least 50 families.

Arthur McNeaney, project manager at the Yoker Resource Centre and DRC, said: “For the last few weeks we have been preparing, cooking and delivering free meals to the most vulnerable people and families in our community and across the city.

“Up to now we have funded this initiative with the help of family and a handful of friends but mainly out of our own pocket.

“Due to the vast need we have experienced and the fact that there is still a long way to go with lockdown, we want to continue with this vital initiative. We want to continue to support the people and families who have been asking for and needing our help.

“We want to offer these families hearty home cooked meals that will not only be good for them health wise but will also be good for morale during this tough time. We are currently supporting over 50 families and the number is growing every day.”
