A DUMBARTON care worker who passed away with suspected coronavirus will be remembered as part of a one minute silence tomorrow.

Catherine Sweeney lost her life in the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley earlier this month - having dedicated more than 20 years as a home carer.

Tomorrow, Dumbarton and the Vale residents are being urged to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day by thinking of those who have lost their lives or suffered from an injury.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “On International Workers’ Memorial Day, the Scottish Government will have a minute’s silence to honour frontline workers, health and care workers who have sadly lost ther lives.

“I would invite everyone to join us at that time.”

The nation will pay its respects at 11am.

A minute silence was observed at this week’s online SNP Administration Group meeting, and councillors will take a moment tomorrow to light a candle and think about friends, colleagues and others that have been affected by workplace injuries and illness.

Wets Dunbartonshire council leader Jonathan McColl said: “We will be observing a minute of silence to show our respects to those who have tragically passed away or suffered a life-changing injury due to their employment.

“The International Workers’ Memorial Day slogan is ‘Remember the Dead; Fight for the Living’, a sentiment that is only too real right now, as our staff and essential workers across the world dedicate every day to delivering vital services to the public during this crisis.

“I would encourage others to join me on Tuesday and light a candle at home and pause for thought, not just in remembrance of those who have lost their lives or been injured, but as a personal act of support for council and other essential workers, and the efforts being made by employers and the public to keep them safe at work.”

Councillor Ian Dickson added: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank again all of our employees who continue to deliver essential services to our communities during the pandemic.

“Your dedication and commitment is greatly valued and appreciated, not only by the council, but by the communities and citizens you are serving.

“The safety of our workforce is paramount, and we will continue to follow Government guidance and work with COSLA, the Scottish Government and Trades Unions to do everything we can to keep our staff safe and well supported.”
