A HEARTLESS thief stole a Dalmuir nurse's bike while she was working a busy shift at the Golden Jubilee Hospital.

The frontline worker received the bike through the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s cycle to work scheme and she had enjoyed the boost in her mental health that cycling to and from work had given her – especially during the stress of the coronavirus pandemic.

The theft has been branded "appalling" by a hospital chief, who praised hard-working NHS staff.

The nurse, who does not wish to be named, told the Post: “The chain was gone and everything. Security said there was no CCTV focusing on the bike stand but he had a look anyway and there was nothing."

In addition to the hurtful theft, the nurse was stranded following her long shift.

She added: "My friend ended up having to give me a lift home.

“There have been people walking through the car park during lockdown, maybe I was naïve to leave it there.”

The incident happened on Thursday, May 28.

Anne Marie Cavanagh, NHS Golden Jubilee’s Nurse Director, said: “During this challenging time for our health service where frontline staff are working hard to keep our communities safe, it is appalling that someone would steal a bike from an NHS site.

“NHS Golden Jubilee has recently installed new bike racks as we encourage staff to cycle to work.

"These are located in a safe space on site and are covered by CCTV.

"As the bike was left in a different location, we do not have CCTV footage, but would appeal for anyone with any information on this theft to contact our colleagues at Police Scotland.”
