MORE than £1,200 was raised to go towards the refurbishment of the Golden Friendship Community Halls at a weekend fund-raising event.

The Dalmuir charity is aiming to create a fully wheelchair accessible venue at their Nairn Place premises.

On Sunday, members of the group along with their families and carers made their way around Victoria Park during the ‘Walk and Roll’ event, despite being buffeted by strong winds.

The charity’s founder, Jim McLaren, is awaiting a hip operation and has not been able to take part in the many sponsored walks which other volunteers set up, leading him to arrange an event where wheelchair users could take part.

The refurbishment of the venue, previously known as the 543 Club, will cost £70,000.

Jim told the Post: “It was windy but dry and we had a great turn out - more than 50 of us.

“All social distancing rules were adhered to, with only families or carers standing in groups.

“With the local lockdown it has been hard to think of ways we can still raise funds but the Clydebank community are great and the refurbishment is coming along nicely thanks to everyone’s donations and sponsors.”

The refurbishment of the venue, previously known as the 543 Club, will cost £70,000 and there has been a limited amount of funding available due to coronavirus dispelling grants and funds from the government and lottery.
