MORE than 900 jobs are set to be lost after banking giant TSB announced a mass shake-up of its branch network.

A third of TSB branches will close later this year, 73 of which are in Scotland, including Alexandria’s Main Street unit.

The local branch is scheduled for closure on May 11, 2021, while the next nearest branch, in Princes Street, Helensburgh will close next January. TSB in Dumbarton closed in July this year.

The closest branch for TSB customers after January will be Clydebank, which survived the round of cuts.

Opening hours at the Main Street unit were significantly cut last year as the company - and the sector - faced up to a shift in customer behaviour, with a reduction in the number of people using branches and an increase in digital banking.

And the latest changes have also been driven by the same reasons, with around 300 jobs being made redundant north of the border.

Debbie Crosbie, chief executive of TSB, which has the seventh largest bank branch network in the UK, said: “Closing any of our branches is never an easy decision, but our customers are banking differently – with a marked shift to digital banking.

“We are reshaping our business to transform the customer experience and set us up for the future. This means having the right balance between branches on the high street and our digital platforms, enabling us to offer the very best experience for our personal and business customers across the UK.

“We remain committed to our branch network and will retain one of the largest in the UK.”
