THREE pupils from Dumbarton and the Vale primary schools have been named as West Dunbartonshire’s latest young sporting stars.

West Dunbartonshire Leisure’s Active Schools initiative chose Gracie Williamson, Maia Bisley and Ruary Breen as their Young Sports Stars of the Month for November.

The local network provides high quality opportunities for children and young people to be more active, more often.

Gracie, a pupil at Christie Park Primary in Alexandria, was nominated by her school for her considerable football talent, playing for local youth club Dumbarton United’s under-12 girls’ team.

In addition, just over a year ago, Gracie was scouted and asked to attend a trial with the Scottish Football Association (SFA) Central Scotland under-12 girls’ team.

She was successful and as a result now trains every week with the squad.

Throughout lockdown, she continued to train at home, working through challenges set by the SFA.

Maia, who attends Braehead Primary in Dumbarton, is a very successful kickboxer and currently British, Irish, Scottish and world champion in her age group.

She holds an array of titles and medals in her chosen sport, including four world titles and 23 gold medals.

Maia trains extremely hard and kept up with her fitness and training programmes throughout lockdown.

She shares her enthusiasm with other children at school, promoting kickboxing at school assemblies and demonstrating her skills during events such as Active Girls Day.

Ruary, also a Braehead pupil, is a member of a go-karting team called RB Racing, competing all over Britain and winning many races.

Ruary travels to Rutherglen four or five times a week to train and participates in race meets most weekends. It is his dream to be a Formula 1 racing driver one day.

He is keen to share his sporting passion with his fellow pupils, and even brought his go-kart to school one day to share at assembly and answering lots of questions.

A spokesperson from West Dunbartonshire Leisure said: “Congratulations to Gracie, Maia and Ruary from Active Schools and all at West Dunbartonshire Leisure. We’re sure they have the skills and dedication to continue to go far in their chosen sports.”
