West Dunbartonshire Council headquarters have lit up green in support of a charity's Christmas appeal.

The former Dumbarton Academy will join dozens of landmarks across the UK this December in lighting up green in support of the NSPCC’s Christmas appeal.

Throughout the week, from December 8-11, the headquarters will shine the charity's distinctive green to help remind people in Dumbarton and the Vale that the NSPCC is here for children whenever they need support.

This is the second year in a row that the building on Church Street has participated in this charity's Christmas appeal.

Since lockdown began, Childline counsellors have delivered almost 2,500 sessions to young people in Scotland concerned about their mental or emotional health and as the pandemic continues, counsellors continue to hear from children who are struggling with all kinds of issues.

Jen Lindsay, community fundraising manager for NSPCC Scotland, said: “It’s really terrific to see Church Street go green again for us this year, it really looks amazing and serves as a reminder that the NSPCC is here for children, like a beacon of light at what can be a dark time of year.

“When home isn’t a safe place, Christmas can be the worst time of year, and when school and other supports are closed, many young people can feel hopeless and alone.

"But we are here, protecting them from abuse and supporting them when they feel like they have nowhere else to turn; on the phone, online, wherever they need us to be, the NSPCC is here.”

The Glasgow Childline base celebrated its 30th year in the city earlier this year, and it was revealed that staff and volunteers had carried out more than three-quarters of a million counselling sessions with children and young people since the base opened in 1990.
