AN intensive care nurse is hoping to head into her night shift on December 25 with a Christmas number one to her name.

Kilbarchan woman Alison Sharp, who has worked at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, for the past seven years, is part of the 100-strong

Liberty Choir, made up of intensive care staff from across the UK.

This month, they are releasing a remake of classic Police track ‘Every Breath You Take’ in a bid to top the festive singles charts and raise funds to support the recovery of NHS staff from the trials of 2020.

The choir ‘met’ for the first time on Zoom on November 25 and had an hour of hilarity, singing a range of songs.

The next week, they were told they had secured recording rights from Sony and they then recorded their individual parts before the song was put together.

Alison, 40, who is married to Graeme and mum to Amy, 14, and Ewan, 11, told The Gazette: “It’s very exciting and surreal because it all happened so quickly.

“Never in a million years did I imagine I’d be recording a song for anyone, let alone one to be released as a contender for the Christmas number one spot.

“We heard the final recording of the song last Wednesday and then, over the weekend, the buzz has been getting bigger.”

Alison first became involved in choirs in primary school and is a member of the Kilbarchan-based Village Voices.

With the choir unable to sing together this year due to Covid, she got involved in the Liberty Choir after spotting an appeal for singers on Twitter.

The experience has been a welcome release for Alison as she faces the hardest period in her 18-year nursing career.

She added: “Usually at Paisley there is one intensive care unit but they opened up another to cope with Covid patients. I have worked across both of them and it’s just been really, really busy.

“The choir has been such a good distraction. When you sing, you’re not thinking about anything else. It has been such a positive experience for everyone involved.”
