BRIDGE of Weir residents are pleading with Scottish Water to find a long-term solution to troublesome drains after their street was left awash with sewage.

Following heavy rain last week, excrement, condoms, sanitary towels and wet wipes were left strewn across Mimosa Road.

Families say this has been a recurring problem over the years and are calling for urgent action.

One resident – a 25-year-old mum with a toddler and a baby – told The Gazette she is no longer able to open her window due to the stench from outside.

Meanwhile, 51-year-old Joanne Williams, who is disabled and lives there with her young son, said the problem is affecting the mental health of residents.

She added: “Renfrewshire Council says it’s a water problem but we have been on to Scottish Water and my neighbour has phoned them umpteen times.

“Given the current time I am so disgusted. You see them in other countries, spraying and cleaning, but we have waste and water spewing out like that and nothing is done.”

A council spokesman said Scottish Water is responsible for any issues with sewer drains, including any associated clean-up, but added that a request will be made for the utility firm to ensure that problems in Mimosa Road are addressed as soon as possible.

Scottish Water, meanwhile, said it had identified an issue on its network near the street, with initial site surveys already scheduled to take place in the new year, ahead of further work being carried out in an effort to resolve the matter.

A pump has also been installed in the area as an interim measure to try to minimise the risk of external flooding.

A spokesperson for Scottish Water added: “There is an ongoing issue with wipes and other inappropriate items being disposed of in the public sewer, causing chokes and spills.

“We were notified of a further issue on Mimosa Road and immediately arranged for our contractor Kier to attend the site and remove the debris from the pump, as well as a contractor to clean the road.

“We will continue to monitor the situation.”

The spokesperson added: “Ahead of the festive season, we would like to take this opportunity to remind our customers to follow the 3Ps – only pee, poo and (toilet) paper should be flushed down the toilet to help avoid blockages and sewer chokes.”
