PLANS have been lodged to build 76 new homes on the site of West Dunbartonshire Council’s former offices in Dumbarton.

Housing developer Miller Homes is seeking planning permission for a mixture of three- and four-bedroom homes, with driveways and parking spaces, on the site of the former council headquarters, nursery and car park on the town’s Garshake Road, which were vacated in 2018 and have since been demolished.

Documents published on the local authority’s website state: “The site comprises approximately 7.4 acres of brownfield land and the surrounding area is predominantly residential.

“The site will have one vehicular access from Garshake Road and would allow connections to the existing footpath on the opposite boundary.”

A Proposal of Application notice was submitted by Miller Homes in November 2019, followed by a public consultation which was attended by 42 residents in the area.

The public consultation feedback states that half of the attendees believe that the housing plans will make a positive impact on the community.

However, the proposal has since caused concern for residents living in nearby street McGregor Drive.

One objection said: “The close proximity of the new homes to our fence line is giving us real cause for concern. Ourselves and our neighbours at are the only properties who have houses so close to our boundary. As the current plans stand, we strongly object.”

A number of existing trees that remain at the empty landsite are being incorporated into the development.
