PEOPLE in Dumbarton and the Vale are being encouraged to help some of the area’s most vulnerable children and young people by joining the Children’s Panel in the area.

The government body is particularly looking for more men and young people in its new recruitment campaign, as those groups are traditionally under-represented in Children’s Panels across Scotland.

Children’s Hearing Scotland is also keen to enrol care experienced young people.

Councillor Karen Conaghan, chair of educational services at West Dunbartonshire Council, said: “Over the years we have had the services of so many committed panel members who have dedicated their time to helping and supporting local families.

“I would encourage anyone who can spare a few hours every month, to please get in touch and together we can make a real difference to children and families going through difficult times.”

Judy Wilson, convener of the Children’s Panel area support team in West Dunbartonshire, added: “We are keen to hear from anyone who is a good listener and is dedicated to making the right decisions for the children we support and their families.

“We are particularly keen to hear from adults who may have had challenging childhoods and are happy to use their knowledge and experience to help guide our younger generation on the right path. Volunteers are essential to ensure the consistent and smooth operation of the Children’s Panel, so I would encourage residents to apply and help us support the young people in West Dunbartonshire.”

Anyone aged 18 or over can apply to become a member, though the organisation is particularly keen for applicants to have trust, compassion, listening skills and empathy.
