AN ALEXANDRIA couple were left “absolutely devastated” after their their nine-month-old puppy died after being struck in a horrific hit-and-run incident in Alexandria.

The incident, which reportedly happened at around 11am on Tuesday, February 2, occurred on Main Street in the town, near the Vale of Leven Academy.

According to witnesses, a vehicle was driven away from the scene after hitting labrador puppy Ollie, owned by Chris Percy and Megan Gallacher.

Chris told the Reporter: “I had let the dog out the back to do the toilet, and was checking on him every couple of minutes while he was playing.

“Last time I looked out to check I thought he was at the back of the garden, but actually he had found a way into our neighbour’s garden and managed to get out to the front.

“Next minute I heard him yelling and I ran out.”

According to Megan, a car struck Ollie and dragged him “for about 30-40 yards” along the street.

Ollie died later that day as a result of his injuries.

Chris and Megan said they’d been left devastated by what happened to their beloved pooch, but added they were being comforted by their family and friends.

“Ollie was our world and our whole heart has been shattered without him,” Megan continued.

“He was an amazing animal loved by many – even people that didn’t know him loved him since we brought him home.

“He was loved by passers-by when we were out for walks.

People couldn’t keep going about their day without clapping him.”

A driver from local firm Dumbarton Carriers witnessed the incident and gave an account on the company’s Facebook page the following day.

They said: “Yesterday while waiting at a junction to come onto the main road a beautiful big dog wandered onto the road and was struck by a vehicle.

“Without hesitating I jumped from my van and ran to comfort him as best as I could as he was in serous distress.

“Unfortunately the big boy lost his fight for life after being taken to the vet.”

Megan and Chris now plan to commemorate the life of Ollie with a special spot in their back garden.

“We have all cupped in to get a headstone for Ollie to put in our back garden to make a spot for him. Everyone has been so supportive.”

Police Scotland are understood to be speaking to Ollie’s owners about the incident.
