A FORMER Bonhill resident is taking part in a tough endurance race to raise money for a local food bank.

Michael Young is raising money for West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare (WDCF) by running the 96-mile West Highland Way from Fort William to Milngavie in less than 35 hours.

The recruitment specialist is already almost a third of the way towards his £2,000 target in an online fund-raiser.

He was inspired after joining the Taking the Plunge support group in December and supporting the charity at Christmas.

Michael said: “I was brought up in Bonhill and left about 25 years ago, so it’s been amazing for me to get back in my old community and see great things happening.

“Taking The Plunge and MBN (my business) supported West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare at Christmas and I got speaking to the amazing people involved.

“They do a food bank, baby bank, toy collections for kids and much more. Every penny raised goes to people who really need it most.

“I’m not a natural runner but I do like a tough mental and physical challenge every now and again to see how far I can push myself.

“No one should go hungry, so please help by donating. Every single penny counts and will make a massive difference to people.”

Spokesperson for WDCF, Clair Coyle, said: “We are delighted that Michael has chosen West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare to benefit from his fundraising.

“Many families and individuals have found themselves needing extra help over this past year and we are here to help.

“Donations of food items have also decreased during this time due to people not accessing the shops as often as before.

“Michael’s fund-raising will enable us to purchase food to ensure we always have adequate stock to distribute.

“When we realised that Michael is aiming to complete the challenge in 35 hours we were blown away.

“We all wish Michael the very best and are really grateful that he has chosen to support the charity.”
