A SOCIALLY distanced vigil is being held in Dumbarton this weekend in memory of Sarah Everard.

Locals are set to gather for a 'Reclaim The Night' vigil opposite Costa Coffee on Dumbarton's High Street at 6pm on Saturday, March 13.

Social distancing must be adhered to, and those in attendance should wear a mask and bring hand sanitiser.

Sarah, 33, went missing after leaving a friend’s house in Clapham, London, to walk home alone at around 9pm on March 3.

A serving police officer, Wayne Couzens, 48, was detained in connection with her disappearance before being arrested on suspicion of murder.

Human remains - which are yet to be formally identified - have since been discovered within woods in the Ashford area of Kent, near the home of the suspect.

The vigil has been organised by Lynda Hannah McEwan, a women's rights activist from Alexandria.

Lynda previously held a 'Reclaim the Night' demonstration in Dumbarton in 2016, which attracted 70 people.

Lynda also organised another event in 2018 which took place in Alexandria.

On her motivation for organising tomorrow's vigil, she said: "I think it's extremely important to do something as every single woman was completely horrified by the disappearance of Sarah.

"We all knew deep down that it was likely something sinister had happened. I think everyone is concerned that she was doing everything right, but it wasn't enough.

"She was wearing trainers, she spoke to her boyfriend on the phone, and she kept to a well-lit, busy area.

"Women, and men, are outraged at the narrative playing out in society at the moment.

"We still tell women to modify their behaviour, that it is their fault.

"Women should be able to walk wherever they like without being murdered.

"I feel really passionately that women need some sort of avenue to vent this anger and frustration at the situation."
