SUPERMARKET chain Aldi is on the lookout for a location for a new store in Dumbarton.

The town is one of 20 locations across Scotland on the German-owned firm's 'wish list' as it aims to expand on its network of 96 supermarkets across the country – soon to reach 100 – and more than 900 around the UK.

No site in Dumbarton has yet been firmly identified as being suitable for a new Aldi store, but the company says it's looking for "freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites suitable for development".

It says each site should be around 1.5 acres and able to accommodate a 20,000 square foot store with around 100 parking spaces, ideally on a prominent main road and with good visibility and access.

Ciaran Aldridge, national property director at Aldi UK, said: “We have been investing in Britain for more than 30 years now, but we know that there are still areas that either do not have an Aldi at all, or that need another store to meet customer demand."

The full list of locations Aldi is targeting in Scotland are Battlefield, Bishopbriggs, Cathcart, Clarkston, Darnley, Dingwall, Dumbarton, Dunblane, Edinburgh, Gourock, Helensburgh, Largs, Maryhill, Peebles, Port Dundas/Springburn, Shotts, South Ayr, Stepps/Moodiesburn, Stonehaven and Tannochside/Uddingston.
