PLANTERS designed by local schoolchildren have been unveiled in Alexandria.

Main Street now features flowerboxes adorned with animal artwork and bird motifs nodding to the history of the area as part of a project undertaken by Vale of Leven Academy.

They were inspired by Turkey Red, a complex dyeing process used to produce a bright red on cloth and yarn, of which the Vale was once the centre of production in Scotland.

Pupils were asked to complete the flowerboxes to mark out the wider pavements around the junction as part of the council project to repair and restore the B-listed Smollett Fountain.

Councillors for the area hope the water feature, which was built by local man William Barlas in 1870, will be cleaned and returned to full working order some time in 2022.
