KIRKTONHILL Tennis Club’s championship finals featured plenty of exciting action in both the junior and adult categories.

It was a day for all age groups, with the junior events taking place in the morning followed by the adult events in the afternoon.

Noteworthy winners included Lewis Boal who won the under-18 boys’ final, and Sophie Dempster who won the girls’ final.

Fortunately, the girls’ final had been played two weeks before - prior to Sophie breaking her arm playing football.

Brothers Lewis and Kyle Mackechnie were winners in several categories: Lewis won no fewer than three of the competitions, the yellow ball boys’ doubles with Lewis Boal, the orange ball mixed doubles with Tanisha Thapar, and the MacDonald Singles Trophy for the under 13s, while Kyle won the Mackechnie Cup in a keenly-contested match against Anthony Boyle.

The highlight of the adults’ matches was the ladies singles’ final, in which Anna Currie beat Lynne Dempster in a marathon three-set contest that provided lots of excitement for the spectators.

Earlier in the day, Anna and Fiona MacDonald beat Lynne Dempster and Danielle Gordon in the final of the ladies’ doubles competition, while Trish Cameron and Gerry McKelvie won the mixed doubles.

The last event of a busy day saw Alan Barbour and Clare Donnelly beat Gerry McKelvie and Fiona MacDonald in the over-45 mixed doubles.

Due to some players having to self-isolate, not all of the finals were played on the day, but everyone at the club is looking forward to watching the outstanding matches in the coming few weeks.
