FED-UP residents have hit out at the poor condition of some roads in the Vale of Leven, prompting a local councillor to call for action over safety fears.

Lomond councillor Martin Rooney received a complaint from an Alexandria resident about the issue, which has plagued McCulloch Land and Hudspeth Court in the Tullichewan estate.

The problems highlighted also includes an area near a children’s play park, and according to Cllr Rooney, the main concern is that the condition of the road and the pot hole at Hudspeth Court and McCulloch Lane is not visible to motorists when it rains and they are more likely to drive into the pothole.

Cllr Rooney said: “At this time of the year, potholes can be a real hazard for vehicles with ponding and leaves disguising their presence and their depth.

“As well as potentially damaging vehicles they can also cause road traffic accidents when motorists brake quickly or swerve to avoid them.

“Potholes are obviously a hazard for pedestrians young and old, as we all have to cross them and anyone can slip or trip on the uneven surface and injure themselves with twisted ankles or even breaking a bone, so it’s important that we report the hazards.

“I’ve asked the chief officer for roads for remedial action to be taken to repair the potholes in Tullichewan but I would encourage others to report any others in their streets so that council officers can investigate and organise repairs.”

A 2020 report claimed that West Dunbartonshire Council paid out more than £13,000 to drivers for pothole damage claims since 2017, while Facebook page “Post Your Potholes WDC” has images of various potholes found across the council area sent in by angry residents who want more done by the council to address the situation.

In response, a West Dunbartonshire Council spokesperson said: “We conduct regular inspections and carry out necessary repairs to ensure the ongoing safety of our roads network.

“This location was inspected within the last four weeks and any issues addressed at the time.

“A programme of resurfacing works will be delivered in the next financial year, and we are currently assessing areas of priority for inclusion within this.”
