An NHS blunder has resulted in an Alexandria man being told to drive all the way to Inverclyde for his flu jab.

The patient, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was asked to make the journey from the town to Port Glasgow for his annual vaccination.

This is despite appointments being available at nearby Alexandria Community Centre.

There were reports of long queues at the centre at the weekend with some elderly residents having to wait for more than an hour.

A spokesperson for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: "We have tried to make it as easy as possible for people to receive their vaccine, and we would like to thank everyone who has rolled up their sleeve to date.

"On occasion, the scheduling system allocates someone to the first appointment available not the nearest one.

"If patients find that they have been allocated an appointment at a clinic which is too far, or are worried about travelling to a clinic, they can change their appointment to a different clinic or get support by calling the national Covid-19 Vaccination Helpline on 0800 030 8013.

"For patients unable or worried about travelling to and from a clinic, free transport and support is available to ensure they are able to safely attend their appointment.

"Any patient wishing to utilise this service or who are concerned about accessing a clinic, should call the national flu hotline on 0800 030 8013.

"People with mobility issues who need to attend a vaccination centre can use SPT's bookable, door-to-door MyBus service. Registration is required prior to booking and advance booking is recommended, as capacity is limited due to social distancing requirements. Details are available atspt.co.uk/bus/mybus or tel: 0345 128 4025."

In line with NHSGGC, the Scottish Government has informed that appointments can be easily rescheduled if the time or location is not suitable.

A spokesperson said: “Local health boards are able to offer assistance to those with mobility issues in travelling to and from their vaccination appointment. When the nature of an individual’s condition means that they cannot travel at all, a home vaccination appointment can be organised. People can contact the number on their appointment letter.

“Should an allotted appointment be unsuitable, both Covid-19 and seasonal flu appointments can be rescheduled through the NHS Inform website or by calling the helpline.

“If someone has been invited by their GP practice or their local health board for their seasonal flu vaccination, they should rearrange your appointment with them directly.”
