DUMBARTON Football Club have paid tribute to former Sons player and manager Bertie Auld, who died at the weekend.

Auld, 83, made his debut for the club aged just 16 in 1954 and went on to make 35 appearances in the course of two spells at Boghead, scoring 11 goals along the way.

A club spokesperson said: “The thoughts of all at Dumbarton FC are with Bertie’s family and friends at this sad time.”

After his second spell at Dumbarton, Auld went on to make 126 appearances for Birmingham City before signing for Celtic and forming part of the legendary Lisbon Lions squad who won the European Cup in 1967.

As a manager, Auld – whose family announced earlier this year that he was suffering from dementia – bossed Partick Thistle (twice), Hibernian and Hamilton Accies before returning to Boghead for a nine-month spell in 1988.
