Pupils from a school in Alexandria dedicated a week to mark National Holocaust Day recently.

Ardfern School, on Lomond Industrial Estate, got creative to express what they had learned about the horrific events of the Holocaust.

The social studies pupils created a beautifully designed poster over three periods to summarise their understanding of what they had learned and express their thoughts.

To delve further into the history they read various pieces of poetry, watched documentaries, wrote reports and participated in lengthy class discussions to help the design of the final poster.

Laura Ramsay, social studies teacher at the school on Darleith Road, told the Reporter: “All of the pupils worked together to design a fantastic poster.

“They really put a lot of time and effort into it to make sure they accurately conveyed what they learned.

“All secondary pupils and staff contributed to the making of the poster and are absolutely delighted with the finished piece.

“We couldn’t be more proud of the pupils and all the hard work they have put into this project.”

The poster has been designed with different elements.

The pupils wrote above about the event and below the heart what they hope about the world can achieve in the future.

The colourful heart in the middle of the poster is said to represent the power of love and is made up of staff and pupils fingerprints.

Ms Ramsay added: “Our pupils outlined the best ways to tackle discrimination.

“They believed its important to listen to others, help others by speaking up and helping where possible when they themselves may not be able to help.

“Although they found the events shocking it was important to share with them what happened in the past.

“They also agreed that only by learning from the past can we learn from our mistakes in order to learn and not repeat mistakes.

“It was a really important subject to learn about and I am glad the pupils got very involved and got creative with what they learned.”
