HUNDREDS of commuters are having to make alternative travel arrangements this morning after a vital rail line through Dumbarton and the Vale was closed.

Network Rail has shut the line between Dalreoch and Balloch to allow engineers to carry out "urgent repairs to the track at Balloch" after reports were received of a collapsed culvert in the area.

ScotRail says disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Trains between Balloch and Airdrie are not running between Balloch and Dumbarton Central. No trains are calling at Balloch, Alexandria or Renton.

ScotRail has requested replacement buses to operate between Dumbarton Central and Balloch, leaving Dumbarton at 25 and 55 minutes past the hour and leaving Balloch at 10 and 40 minutes past the hour and calling at Renton and Alexandria, though there will be no departure from Dumbarton at 8.55am.

Dalreoch station is still being served by trains on the Helensburgh-Edinburgh route.
