A BUDDING footballer from the Vale has been named as Active School’s latest “young sports star” for this month.

Cooper Scanlon, from Christie Park Primary, has been selected for his hard work and commitment to sports outside of school.

The talented defender, who plays for Renton Black 2011s, started his incredible footballing journey when he was only three years old and then at the age of seven started training with St Mirren FC, which he really enjoyed.

Committed Cooper hones his skills and fitness by training twice a week, with a 5k run too on Saturdays.

During the season, Cooper plays football on a Saturday and Sunday where he encourages all his team-mates and is always giving direction and words of encouragement.

He also has a perfectly timed slide tackle that he just loves to do in every game. meaning he truly is fearless.

Despite suffering from diabetes, it has never stopped him from giving 100 per cent at all times – and he makes sure it doesn’t hinder his progress as he takes his medication before training and games.

A West Dunbartonshire Leisure spokesperson said: “A big congratulations to Cooper from Active Schools and all at West Dunbartonshire Leisure.”

Meanwhile, if you want to play your part in shaping the young Dumbarton and the Vale sporting stars of the future, West Dunbartonshire Leisure are looking for more volunteers to help get children in Dumbarton and the surrounding area more active.
