A NURSERY in Old Kilpatrick is to close for two days due to "significant damage" caused by fire.

Firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze at Gavinburn Early Learning Centre at around 7.45pm on Saturday (June 25) after receiving multiple calls about a play hut at the site being on fire.

Crews remained at the scene for around two hours, leaving shortly before 9.30pm after making the area safe.

There were no injuries during the incident.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received multiple calls at around 7.45pm on Saturday, June 25 to a play hut on fire outside Gavinburn Early Learning Centre in Old Kilpatrick.

"Operations control mobilised two appliances to the scene. There was minor damage to the school due to some fire spread.

"Crews left the area at around 9.26pm. There were no injuries."

West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) announced the closure on Sunday, stating that the nursery will not be able to open on Monday, June 27, and Tuesday, June 28.

However, the council reassured parents, carers, and guardians that Gavinburn Primary School would open as normal.

A WDC spokesperson said: "We are very sorry to have to inform you that due to significant damage caused by a fire at Gavinburn ELCC yesterday, we are unable to open the nursery to children on Monday, June 27 and Tuesday, June 28.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and upset this may cause you and your families, and thank you for your support and understanding at this time.

"The fire is currently subject to an investigation by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

"Please note that Gavinburn Primary School is unaffected and will open as normal tomorrow morning."

Police are investigating the incident and confirmed that enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “We were called around 7.55pm on Saturday, June 25, to a report of a fire in the Dumbarton Road area of Old Kirkpatrick.

"Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.”

In a separate incident earlier this month, a wooden hut was deliberately set alight at Our Lady of Loretto Primary in Clydebank.

WDC confirmed it was working with Police Scotland to make the school grounds more secure and to deter any further firebugs after vandals struck at the Dalmuir site more than 10 times in the last six months.
