Senior pupils at Dumbarton's schools are being encouraged to apply for a term-time allowance fund of £30 a week.

Young people aged between 16-19 years old who are staying on at school when the new term begins in August may be eligible for the funding from the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) provided by West Dunbartonshire Council.

The grant, which is paid fortnightly, provides an incentive for young people from lower-income families to continue with their education, either in school or college.

Councillor Clare Steel, the authority's convener of educational services, said: “This weekly term-time allowance supports pupils’ access to education and is a good incentive to remain at school and further their education.

"I would encourage all young people who are eligible to apply to ensure they do not miss out on £30 every week, during each of the school terms, from August.”

Who is eligible?

To qualify, the income for a household with one dependent child must be below £24,421 and less than £26,884 for two children.

The student must also attend a school in West Dunbartonshire for at least 21 hours per week.

Councillor Michelle McGinty, vice convener of educational services, added: “The council continues to work hard to raise awareness about the financial support that is available to eligible households.

“We know the financial pressures families are feeling with the cost of living increasing.

"This money will not affect any other benefits claimed by parents and carers. This financial support could make all the difference to encourage a young staying on at school to further their education and I would urge any eligible families to claim this money.”
