A LOCAL couple recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary marking a wonderful 60 years together.

Margaret and John Brooks met in 1960 while they were both working in Burroughs in Alexandria.

John later moved to Australia to work, with Margaret following him to the other side of the globe - and the couple got married in Melbourne on July 21, 1962.

They remained in Australia for another five years until 1967 and welcomed their son David there.

The family returned to Scotland where they lived and worked. Margaret worked in McDermids Newsagents on Mitchell Way in Alexandria and John was an ambulance technician.

Margaret and John expanded their family in Scotland welcoming their daughter Lynn.

They have four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, with another on the way.

Margaret, who was born in Alexandria, enjoys knitting and reading. Her maiden name is Lynn and her great-grandfather owned Lynn's boatyard in Balloch.

John, who was born in Dumbarton, still swims at the Vale Swimming Pool four days a week at 85 years old.

Not only is July 21 special as it is the couple's wedding anniversary, but it is also Margaret's birthday - she celebrated her 80th birthday this year!

On their 60th anniversary Margaret and John were surprised with a visit from Depute Provost John Millar who congratulated the couple on their remarkable milestone.
