AN Alexandria man who hurled abuse at social workers and then fled from police on a bicycle has been ordered to do unpaid work.

Ben Ellis appeared from custody at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last week after being held overnight for turning up four hours late for a hearing. He claimed he had slept in.

The 20-year-old then pleaded guilty to two charges from an incident in Alexandria last year.

Depute fiscal Euan Nicholson told the court that around 5pm on June 16, 2021, social workers went to a property in Halkett Crescent, Alexandria, for a welfare check and knocked on the door.

Ellis refused entry and said: “Nah, f*** off, I’m not doing this.”

He then exited the property acting aggressive and said, “Get that f***ing slag away from here” and “I told you I’m not dealing with her”.

Ellis later left on his bicycle and was approached by police asking about the welfare of a child.

He cycled off and officers followed in their car and tried to get him to stop. Ellis then pushed his bike into one of the cops, the handle bar hitting his leg.

He made off on foot, and later turned up at Clydebank police office where he was cautioned and charged.

Ellis replied, “It’s a bit bullsh*t to be fair” and “they deserve it”.

Ellis pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, shouting, swearing and behaving in an aggressive manner and uttering offensive remarks to two social workers

And he admitted assaulting a police officer by pushing his bicycle towards the cop and striking him on the body.

He was on bail at the time.

Defence solicitor Kenny McGowan told the court on August 26: “He responded entirely inappropriately to the intervention of the two social workers. He compounded the situation with the police officers.”

Sheriff Maxwell Hendry warned Ellis that if he ever appeared in court again on similar charges, he would be sent to prison.

He ordered him to complete 100 hours of unpaid work in the community within a year.
