A DUMBARTON nursery has received top marks for the second time after impressing inspectors.

Staff and children at the Andrew B Cameron Early Learning and Childcare Centre on Broomhill Drive are celebrating after the centre was given a “very good” rating.

The nursery, which is run by West Dunbartonshire Council and has been open for three years, received grade 5 awards for its setting, leadership and staff team and a grade 4 for care and learning.

In feedback provided to inspectors, staff at the ELCC were praised for strongly encouraging family engagement in their facility.

The report stated: “Families told us they were positively involved in nursery life. These opportunities included parents participating in sports days, reading challenges and bake and plant sales which enabled children to use coins in a real-life context.”

Inspectors also heard how families were kept informed through various methods of communication such as an app, phone calls, emails and regular conversations with parents.

One parent said: “Every Friday I get an update on the app with what they have done, achieved and a few photos. I personally love this part; it’s the highlight of my week to see what has been done.”

The report also highlighted that children were involved in preparing their mealtimes and given the role of lunch helpers - though inspectors did find that the location of the tables for the children was not suitable for the setting.

It continued: “We found the location and position of the tables could be cramped and overcrowded and did not offer all children a comfortable and relaxing experience.”

However, they said the committed staff have a strong sense of teamwork and observed all the children’s play and interests by using book and word of the week initiatives, and using provocations to get imaginations going.

Inspectors said: “A significant strength of the service was the opportunity for staff to participate in professional development and undertook lead roles.

“These included eco and community involvement. Staff told us these opportunities had positively impacted their practice and the learning experiences they offered children and families.”

West Dunbartonshire Council has been approached for comment.
