TWO hard-working people in West Dunbartonshire have been announced as Volunteer of the Year.

Pam Gosal MSP announced the winners of her awards following the conclusion of Volunteers’ Week.

The West Scotland MSP decided to hold the awards to pay tribute to the “unsung heroes” who play such a vital role in local communities.

Billy Muir, from Dumbarton, volunteers as a caseworker for the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA).

His role involves supporting veterans in distress to get the help they need.

He said: “I served in the British Armed Forces for nine years in the Royal Logistics Corps.

"When I left the forces, I was diagnosed with PTSD and got some great help and support from SSAFA The Armed Forces Charity.

"I have been a caseworker volunteer for the past five years within the Clydebank and West Dunbartonshire area and will continue to give assistance and support to those who need support.

"I'm very grateful for receiving the award. It is nice to be recognised for the support and help that I give to ex-service personnel.”

And Joan Watkins, from Old Kilpatrick, volunteers with Carers of West Dunbartonshire.

She supports unpaid carers and has helped to run the local Carers Book Group for five years.

The competition received dozens of nominations for inspirational people who volunteer all over West Dunbartonshire.

The winners received a certificate to recognise their contribution to local services.

Ms Gosal said: “I am delighted to recognise just a few of the fantastic volunteers in West Dunbartonshire who tirelessly help others in our communities.

“The dedication, hard work and commitment from these volunteers is incredible. Their enthusiastic efforts ensure that many local services continue to run and they provide amazing levels of support so that other people’s lives are a little better.

“Thank you to everyone who nominated a local volunteer and congratulations to the worthy winners. I hope this award serves as a reminder of everyone’s gratitude for what they do all year round.

“Joan Watkins plays an essential role by helping unpaid carers come together, meet up with others, get a break and build friendships. The support and safety she gives to others is an inspiration.

“I’m very impressed by the way that Billy Muir has used his own experiences in the British Army to help veterans who understandably struggle to adapt back into civilian life. His volunteering work is highly valued and he is an essential part of local Armed Forces organisations.”
