TWO students from Dumbarton have been selected for highly sought-after apprenticeship schemes.

West College Scotland student Jamie Wright, 18 secured an engineering modern apprenticeship (MA) with BAE, which has only 10 places available nationally.

He said: "I don’t think I would have secured a place without this course because they’re so competitive. The apprenticeship will be better than university because I’ll be getting paid while I learn”.

And Phoenix Duggan, 17, along with another student will be progressing onto the same scheme with Rolls Royce -  this is the first time that students on the course at the college will progress onto the same modern apprenticeship scheme.

He said: "This course really sets you apart from others by giving you practical experience. The college really supported me during my application process too as it can be daunting knowing you’re up against thousands of other applicants. The positive references from college lecturers definitely helped to support my application”.

They are two out of the seven current foundation apprenticeship (FA) engineering students studying at the Paisley campus who will be joining the schemes after the summer.

Other big employers include Babcock, Chivas and Diageo.

During the FA course, students also had the opportunity to gain real-life experience within a variety of engineering environments when they undertook a week’s work experience with different employers including NHS Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital Paisley, Marriott Hotel and Eclipse Blinds.

Students explained having the ability to discuss their wide variety of theoretical and practical work, alongside work experience, during interviews for the modern apprenticeship schemes helped to demonstrate their applied skills which contributed to setting them apart from other applicants.

Lecturer Iain McQuade said: “It’s incredible really that two of our FA students will join the same modern apprenticeship with Rolls Royce.

"The modern apprenticeship schemes are extremely competitive with thousands of students applying from all over the UK and only 17 places available in Scotland for this specific MA.

"I’m really proud that two of our FA students will be joining this year’s cohort with Rolls Royce and of all the students moving onto MAs or further studies”.
