The Scottish Government must bring justice to Scottish sub-postmasters caught up in the Horizon scandal, Dumbarton's MSP has urged.

The scandal has returned to the spotlight after STV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office premiered.

MSP Jackie Baillie said: "Post-masters and Post-mistresses affected by the Horizon scandal have waited too long for justice already and it is unthinkable that the situation should be allowed to continue any longer in Scotland.

“Scotland differs from England in that the Crown Office was responsible for prosecuting those affected and their handling of these cases should be urgently reviewed.

“I call on Humza Yousaf to take swift action to remedy the situation and ensure compensation for those who have already lost so much.”

The controversy emerged from numerous allegations of fraud against Post Office branch owners, who suffered criminal convictions, loss of livelihood, financial damage, public shame, and extensive jail terms between 1999 and 2015.

Public anger has grown over the reluctance of both the Post Office and the government to listen to fears that their Horizon computer software was responsible for the errors in accounting.

Many owners who ran smaller Post Office branches were adversely affected.

The UK Government has since taken steps to retract the convictions linked to Horizon and offered compensation.

However, many believe this does not sufficiently assist those whose lives and livelihoods the rogue computer system ruined.

The controversy continues in Scotland, where lawyers express concerns that Scottish victims could be left behind.

They urge the Scottish Government to deliver justice in approximately 100 affected Scottish cases.
