A 14-year-old boy who died at the scene of a tragic crash in Keighley has been named locally.

Police confirmed the teenager died after the crash on Tarn Lane, a rural road near Braithwaite known as the 'Yorkshire Bumps', at 2.19pm on Sunday, April 28.

Ellis Lockley was a passenger in the silver Vauxhall Corsa as it travelled in the direction of Black Hill Lane.

The driver of the vehicle - a 21 year old man - was taken to hospital for treatment and later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He remains in police custody at this time.

Two other passengers in the car suffered minor injuries, police said.

The death of young Ellis has sent shockwaves of grief throughout the Keighley area.

A memorial event in Ellis’ memory has been shared widely on social media.

Those who wish to share in their loss are invited to Braithwaite Ring from 5.30pm on Friday, May 3.

The post reads: “Let’s turn the sky blue for Ellis. Bring your balloons, fireworks, bikes and quads, but most importantly bring yourself.”

Police statement

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Inspector Paul Conroy of the Major Collision Enquiry Team said: “This is a tragic incident where a young boy has lost his life in a serious road traffic collision.

“His family are being supported by specially trained officers.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area yesterday who saw the vehicle or collision of who may have dash cam footage to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101 or use the Live Chat facility at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/livechat.

Members of the public should quote log 898 of Sunday, April 28, 2024.

Tarn Lane is known by many as the ‘Yorkshire Bumps’ due to the road's undulating nature.

It is not the first tragedy to have taken place along the country road.

In 2005, three men died in a 60mph crash. They were passengers in a car which flew ten metres through the air over one of the small hills in the road.

Following the trial, PC John Lawson, of Keighley Traffic, who headed up the investigation, said at the time: "There are no winners or losers in something like this. Three young people have lost their lives but nothing changes for the parents. It does not bring their sons back.

"There are more and more accidents with cars full of young men tragically losing their lives. Hopefully this may make people think twice."
