1. Talented choir took part in Commonwealth Games musical celebration 

The Gazette:

A talented choir group took part in an inspiring musical celebration for the Commonwealth Games.

With the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games on the horizon 1- years ago, members of NYCos Renfrewshire took part in a series of Going for Gold concert alongside the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, RSNO Junior Chorus and Children’s Classic Concerts.

The events, which took place in Glasgow and Dundee, featured more than 700 members from 13 of the National Youth Choir of Scotland’s Area Choirs located across Scotland.

2.  Storm-damaged attraction reopened by hockey club

The Gazette:

A storm-damaged farm attraction had been officially reopened after being closed for a period of time.

Lamont City Farm in Erskine was forced to close its doors after severe weather left the site unsafe.

A storm ripped through the roof of the charity’s base, leaving £10,000 of damage in its wake.

Volunteers had feared the farm would have to close for good due to a lack of funds but, with help, hard work and fundraising from the Paisley Pirates and other volunteers, the farm is back up and running only six months on.

The Paisley Pirates Ice Hockey Club took time out of their busy schedule to formally declare to farm open in an event celebrating its return to the local community.

3. Village school girl gets royal honour

The Gazette:

At a ceremony at Bishopton Community Centre, 12-year-old Olivia McDonald was crowned the new 2014 Bishopton Princess.

Olivia, a P7 pupil at Bishopton Primary, performed the opening ceremony at Bishopton Gala Day.

Three attendants, Jenny Heron, 11, Olivia Stalker, 9, and Rachel Lamb, 8, were also appointed during the ceremony and will support the new princess in her role.

Mary Ross, leader of the Bishopton Youth Club and organiser of the ceremony, said: “This is an eagerly anticipated annual event when all the girls are hoping that it will be their lucky year to become a Princess or to be one of her attendants.

“The girls that were selected are all looking forward to this year’s festivities."

4.  Queen of fashion battling to front major campaign

The Gazette:

Jenna Smart is a real style hero – just ask her mum and hundreds of locals who voted for her.

The 26-year-old from Linwood had been chosen as intu Braehead’s most stylish shopper and she went forward to the finals of the national Style Hero contest.

Scots were urged to vote for Jenna as she goes up against 11 other finalists from intu centres around the UK.

5. Badminton champ serves up a treat for primary school kids

The Gazette:

Children had caused a racket when a Commonwealth Games athlete visited their school.

Pupils at Bridge of Weir Primary were delighted when badminton champion Jillie Cooper stopped off at the school for a special visit last Monday.

They have been learning about Glasgow 2014 as part of the curriculum of excellence and have been getting into the spirit of things by holding a series of events at the school.

As well as basing drama shows, visits and physical education classes around the Commonwealth theme, the youngsters also have a number of visitors lined up.

Elaine Kent, deputy head teacher, explained: “We contacted Game on Scotland about having a Commonwealth Games athlete visit us and we were delighted to have Jillie Cooper.

6. Pupils talk their way to the top

The Gazette:

Two talented teenagers proved they have the gift of the gab after winning an international debating competition.

Jessica Curry and Alex Schellekens triumphed at an international debating competition.

The pair, both pupils at St Columba’s High School in Kilmacolm, saw off 250 teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Greece and Canada to win the International Competition for Young Debaters in the Oxford Union.

The pair competed against Eton College, Dulwich College and Upper Canada College to clinch the renowned title.
