A regeneration scheme is being expanded following feedback from the community.

The project in Alexandria, which initially focused on Mitchell Way, will now include further improvements to Main Street in order to encourage more people to visit the town.

This follows consultation with residents and members of the business community through the Alexandria Business Improvement District (BID), who called for the project to be widened.

Councillor David McBride, convener of infrastructure, regeneration and economic development, said: "I am delighted that the scope of this project will be widened after feedback was provided from both members of the business community and residents in the local area.

"Public consultation is a key tool for local authorities to engage directly with the people who will be most affected by regeneration projects.

"This just goes to show how important it is to make your voice heard when you get the opportunity."

Feedback gathered through online and face-to-face engagement highlighted a desire for improvements to the wider town centre, including better pavements and lighting.

Respondents also wanted both Mitchell Way and Main Street to become areas where people want to spend time.

The council said the pedestrian route through the town centre was identified as a key regeneration priority in the Alexandria masterplan.

Conversations will continue with members of the BID to discuss the scope of the project and identify what steps can be taken to improve the town centre.

Councillor Lawrence O’Neill, vice convener of infrastructure, regeneration and economic development, said: "It is testament to people involved and invested in the town that they have taken the chance to have their opinions heard and acted upon.

"This is an exciting chapter for Alexandria, and I look forward to seeing how these plans progress."
