Well, it looks like the wheels have finally come off for Rishi Sunak -  and it’s increasingly likely that this wretched Tory government is headed for the political scrapheap.

That it was an inside job, organised by a discredited former Prime Minister, one who was about to have the book thrown at him by a House of Commons committee for deliberately misleading parliament, which looks to have delivered that final nail in their coffin, only adds to the Pythonesque absurdity of the situation.

Sunak is now a lame-duck Prime Minister trying to lead a disintegrating parliamentary group, consumed by a civil-war, with a party membership still loyal, in large parts, to the now disgraced Boris Johnson.

But, tempted as I am to get the popcorn out and indulge in the schadenfreude of the Tories’ imminent collapse, in truth, we simply cannot afford the time, as urgent action will be needed to repair the damage wrought by the Tories in the last 13 years.

But we should never forget that the damage done to our communities was done to us by a government that Scotland didn’t vote for, and whose reckless policies we overwhelmingly rejected.

And we should be aware too that those most likely to replace the Tories as a United Kingdom government, Sir Keir Starmer’s pro-Brexit Labour party, have vowed to keep the UK on the same path of economic destruction and international isolationism as the Tories, with their steadfast refusal to join the Single Market or the Customs Union, and their economically illiterate opposition to the Free Movement of People.

Sir Keir Starmer’s claim that he can make Brexit work is either knowingly disingenuous or utterly delusional. Because he knows that staying outside of the single market, turning your back on the Customs Union and ignoring the reality that free movement of people has been of huge economic benefit to the UK, is economic madness, and will only deepen and lengthen the cost-of-living crisis we are currently experiencing.

But the Labour party have decided that purely for short-term, electoral advantage, to press on with these insane policies, hope they’ll play well in the 'red wall', north of England, Brexit-supporting constituencies. And he expects you, and the rest of Scotland, despite all the evidence from your own painful experience of Brexit, to simply go along with his plan.

But it doesn’t have to be this way and when the wheels do finally come off this shambles of a government, it’ll be the SNP alone who will be making the case that: Scotland needs to be in the Single Market.

Scotland needs to be part of the Customs Union.

Scotland needs free movement of people.

Scotland needs to be back in European Union.

And move than ever, Scotland needs independence.
