St Patrick’s FP progressed through to the last eight of the West of Scotland Cup after beating local rivals Dumbarton Academy FP 2-1 on Saturday.

It was the first competitive derby between the teams since the mid 1980s and it drew a big crowd.

They were treated to a competitive match, played on a difficult surface, with St Patricks earning a place in the last eight of the cup.

The tackles were hard and fair, with referee Derrick Park doing well to allow the game to flow without boiling over.

Accies forward Conor McGlinchey and St Pats’ Daniel Finnigan both had early chances on goal.

Accies forward Andrew Burton, St Pats’ Mark Docherty and Accies’ Andrew MacDonald also rued near misses, before the home side took the lead on 36 minutes.

A good passing move saw the ball arrive at Burton, who turned and placed a 20 yard pass diagonally inside the St Pats box. Alan Nicholson then took the ball round St Pats keeper Neil Roache and calmly stroked it.

Just before half-time, McGlinchey beat two St Pat’s defenders then passed to Burton. The forward’s volley was blocked well.

St Pat’s were clearly keen to get back on level terms and Neill MacGuire saw a shot flash wide.

MacDonald then fired a shot off target.

St Pat’s equalised on the hour, when a good move down the right resulted in a cross deep by Ross Cannon into Accies box. Daniel Finnigan had the easiest of tasks to bundle the ball home off the underside of the bar.

St Pat’s then scored what proved to be the winning goal on 68 minutes. Accies lost control of the ball inside their own half. A quick counter-attack saw Kevin McElory released and his right-foot finish left Accies keeper Andrew McGillivray with no chance.

The keeper saved on-target shot with 15 minutes on the clock.

Accies pressed hard for an equaliser, but Marcus Dooley saw a scrambled attempt at the box post go narrowly wide. Jack Buchanan could only steer the ball into Roache’s arms.
