A strong performance by Dumbarton Academy FP saw them progress to the quarter-final of the Alona West of Scotland Cup after beating Third Lanark 3-1 on Saturday.

Accies started on the front foot and were left frustrated after only three minutes when Jack Buchanan struck the upright following a good pass from Marcus Dooley.

Third Lanark were rarely seen in attack during the opening exchanges and Accies’ pressure was finally rewarded on 25 minutes.

An excellent pass by David Goodwin released Andrew MacDonald clear of the Third Lanark defence and the forward steadied himself before calmly finishing well.

The second half followed a similar pattern to that of the first.

Alan Sweeney saw an effort go over the bar, while MacDonald hit the side netting.

Accies took a firm grip on the game by scoring a second on the hour.

Alan Nicholson released MacDonald down the right-hand side, who then passed to Allan MacPherson whose good movement allowed him to take the ball in his stride, go round the keeper and stroke the ball into an empty net.

A good interchange between Conor McGlinchey and MacDonald then saw the latter provided with the opportunity to score Accies’ third and his second, which he didn’t hesitate in accepting.

To their credit Third Lanark kept looking to score, Allan Semple tried his luck from distance but failed to trouble Accies keeper Andrew McGillivray.

Third Lanark’s efforts were rewarded with a goal eight minutes from time. A goal-mouth scramble saw Gregor Lopez provided the opportunity to score from 18 yards.

Accies’ rearguard were disappointed at not keeping a clean sheet.

Third Lanark substitute Duncan MacIntyre saw red in the final minute, with referee Andy Brown then blowing the final whistle.

Accies next game is on Saturday, February 23 away against Stenhousemuir Community in the league. Kick-off is at 2pm.
