Jim Duffy praised his Dumbarton side’s mentality as they picked up a vital point away to Forfar Athletic on Saturday.

The result was Sons’ first goalless draw in the league since February 2018 against Falkirk.

And despite not being able to pick up the win, Duffy was pleased with the point.

The gaffer urged his side to go for all three points at the break but was ultimately pleased they didn’t capitulate and throw away all three as they would have done earlier in the season.

He said: “It wasn’t a pretty game. There weren’t many times where the ball was on the floor.

“In those type of games you want to take something and not lose it, which is something we haven’t done enough this season.

“We emphasised to the players at half-time that if it was 0-0 we would go and try and win it, but as the game gets into the latter stages don’t make basic errors and get carried away.”

The battle to beat the drop will go down to the wire with Sons and Stranraer currently on 39 points but Brechin and Stenhousemuir close by on 35 points.

It is in Dumbarton’s hands and they know they cannot be automatically relegated or fall into the play-offs if they pick up seven points from the final nine.

But with play-off chasing East Fife visiting The Rock before Stranraer arrive the following week, it’s going to be a difficult end as Sons then travel to champions Arbroath on the day they will lift the League One trophy.

But Duffy admits that his side will not be looking at other results as his side look to consolidate their place in the league.

He added: “You can’t worry about anybody else. It doesn’t matter how anybody else does, the others will be looking at how we are doing.

“If we do our jobs properly we can have a good end to the season, and if not then we will have a nervy end.

“You can only focus on what we are able to do over the next three games.”
